In a significant development for Volkswagen's electric vehicle strategy in China, the upcoming ID.UNYX 07 model has been unveiled through regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This marks the second model in Volkswagen's Unyx series, specifically designed for the competitive and rapidly evolving Chinese electric vehicle market.
The ID.UNYX 07, produced by Volkswagen Anhui, is set to be the first to utilize Volkswagen’s new electrical architecture, tailored specifically for China. This model is larger than its predecessor, the ID.UNYX 06, with dimensions that classify it as a mid-size vehicle. It measures 4,853mm in length, 1,852mm in width, and 1,566mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,826mm. The design maintains the unique styling language of the ID.UNYX family, featuring sharp headlights and an accentuated lower bumper. It will offer three different wheel designs with either 235/50 R19 or 235/45 R20 tyres, indicating a focus on providing varied aesthetic options for consumers.
Inside, the ID.UNYX 07 suggests a shift with its flat-topped steering wheel, hinting at a modernized interior compared to the ID.UNYX 06. However, it is expected to retain the integrated seats and a large central control screen, which have become signature features in Volkswagen’s electric lineup. Currently, a single-motor version is registered, offering a maximum power output of 170 kW (228 hp), similar to the ID.UNYX 06. However, Volkswagen plans to expand the lineup with dual-motor versions in the future, catering to a wider range of consumer needs.
The ID.UNYX 07 will be powered by CATL’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, aligning with the industry's shift towards more sustainable and efficient battery technologies. Volkswagen's launch plan includes introducing the ID.UNYX 07 in 2026 as part of a broader strategy, which will see the introduction of three new models that year, encompassing both SUVs and sedans. This strategic move is designed to solidify Volkswagen’s presence in China's competitive EV market, which is characterized by rapid technological advancement and increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles.
Official images accompanying the regulatory filing reveal additional features such as a sectional panoramic sunroof that opens outward, a design choice aimed at preserving interior space. The ID.UNYX 07 also features illuminated Volkswagen badging at both the front and rear, adding to its modern aesthetic appeal. These design elements reflect Volkswagen’s commitment to blending functionality with style, ensuring the vehicle appeals to a broad range of consumers while also standing out in a crowded marketplace.
Volkswagen's strategy to use Xpeng’s autonomous driving technology, XNGP, for its China EVs starting in 2026 underscores the importance of local partnerships in penetrating the Chinese market. This collaboration will also see the deployment of Xpeng's Turing AI ADAS chips in Volkswagen models, which promises to enhance the driving experience with advanced autonomous features. Such collaborations are vital for Volkswagen as it aims to adapt its vehicles to meet local consumer expectations and regulatory requirements, emphasizing the 'in China for China' strategy.
