Volkswagen is set to make a groundbreaking move with its popular ID.4 electric vehicle, slated for a substantial mid-life update in 2026. This transformation will be so comprehensive that the vehicle will be rebranded as the ID.Tiguan, aligning its identity with the well-known petrol-powered Tiguan.

The Volkswagen ID.4, a cornerstone in the brand's electric vehicle lineup, is poised to undergo a transformation that warrants more than just a facelift. According to Thomas Schafer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, the update will introduce the MEB+ platform, featuring new battery technology and LFP cells, marking a significant leap from the current model. The ID.4 has been pivotal as Volkswagen's major-selling electric vehicle, necessitating updates to remain competitive in the evolving EV market.

The impending changes are not just skin deep; they extend to the vehicle's interior and overall design language. Volkswagen has hinted at a cleaner, more streamlined exterior style and a revamped interior that may include more physical controls, addressing critiques of the current model's cabin. This extensive makeover draws parallels to past model upgrades, akin to the transition from the Mk5 to Mk6 Golf, which retained the same underpinnings but was recognized as a new generation.

The rebranding to ID.Tiguan suggests a strategic move by Volkswagen to capitalize on the established Tiguan name, aligning its electric offerings with familiar and trusted models. While Schafer has not officially confirmed this rebranding, the speculation aligns with Volkswagen's strategy of assigning classic names to its ID. models, following the example of the ID.2all's evolution into the ID.Polo.

As Volkswagen pushes forward with its electric vehicle strategy, the ID.3, another model in the ID. lineup, is also set to receive updates. However, these will largely focus on the interior, with minimal changes to the exterior, reflecting a cautious approach to maintaining the iconic Golf brand. This mirrors the pressures and expectations tied to the Golf name, emphasizing the importance of strategic positioning in Volkswagen's product line.

For those eager to experience Volkswagen's advancements in electric mobility before 2027, alternatives like the Skoda Enyaq, a close cousin to the ID.4, are available. This model offers a glimpse into the future of Volkswagen's electric offerings, providing tech-savvy consumers with access to the latest in EV technology and design.

Excited to see the ID.4 transform into the ID.Tiguan! If it's anything like the Tiguan, this EV will be a game-changer. Can't wait for the 2026 update!

Rebranding an EV to a well-known name like Tiguan feels like a marketing gimmick. Hope they focus more on the tech improvements rather than just a name change.

Interesting move! Will the ID.Tiguan have more range with the new MEB+ platform? Curious to see how these updates will set it apart from other EVs.
