The BYD Atto 3, a popular electric vehicle in China, is set to receive a significant power boost in its 2026 model. As it applies for a domestic sales license, this update reflects BYD's commitment to maintaining competitive edge in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
The BYD Atto 3 is undergoing a substantial transformation with its latest update, which will see an additional 107 horsepower added to its powertrain. This enhancement comes as part of the 2026 model year upgrades, as the vehicle applies for a domestic sales license in China. The Atto 3 will incorporate the electric motor from the Seal EV sedan, delivering a peak power of 230 kW (308 hp). This marks a significant increase compared to its predecessor, aligning the Atto 3 with current market demands for higher performance electric vehicles.
Introduced initially in China under the name Yuan Plus in February 2022, the Atto 3 has already achieved remarkable success, expanding to over 110 countries and surpassing one million units sold. However, as the EV market evolves, the Atto 3 has faced challenges from competitors offering more power and faster charging capabilities. In March 2025, BYD addressed some of these issues by updating the Atto 3's advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), but the core performance issues remained. The latest update focuses on the powertrain, promising to address these concerns comprehensively.
The Atto 3's new specifications include a larger and potentially more powerful battery, though exact details are yet to be disclosed. The vehicle’s curb weight has increased, hinting at this battery enhancement. The updated Atto 3 adopts the same permanent magnet electric motor found in both the Denza N7 fastback crossover and the Seal EV sedan, both of which utilize an 800V high-voltage system. This upgrade allows for a DC charging power of 150 kW, nearly doubling the charging speed of the current Atto 3 model. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve the Atto 3’s market competitiveness.
The exterior of the updated Atto 3 maintains continuity with the 2025 model, featuring a large trapeze-shaped air intake, smoked headlights, and blackened D-pillars. New 18-inch rims add a fresh aesthetic touch. The dimensions remain consistent, with a length of 4455 mm, a width of 1875 mm, and a height of 1615 mm, along with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm. Despite the bulkier build, these dimensions ensure the vehicle retains its compact SUV appeal, suitable for urban environments while offering enhanced performance.
Looking forward, the updated BYD Atto 3 is poised to enter the domestic market with renewed vigor, aiming to capture the attention of both new and existing customers. This strategic update not only reflects BYD's adaptive approach to market demands but also underscores the company's commitment to leading the charge in electric vehicle innovation. As the Atto 3 prepares to launch, it promises to deliver on both performance and technological advancements, reinforcing BYD's position as a formidable player in the global EV landscape.
