As the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit came to a close in September 2025, a surge in EV sales marked the third quarter, with consumers eager to capitalize on the incentives before they vanished. This uptick in purchases saw many models achieving significant growth, yet Tesla remains the dominant force in the market. With nine months of 2025 behind us, we delve into the data to reveal the top ten bestselling EVs so far this year.

The EV sector experienced a marked boost in sales as consumers rushed to secure vehicles before the expiration of the federal tax credit. This surge provided a lifeline to many automakers, with some models seeing unprecedented quarterly performances. Despite this, Tesla continues to lead the pack, maintaining its status as the frontrunner in the industry. With fierce competition from other manufacturers, the landscape of EV sales is rapidly evolving.

Kicking off the list is the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which clings onto the tenth spot with 20,825 units sold. Although its Q3 sales only saw a modest 1% increase, the year-to-date figures show a 37% growth since its launch in late 2023. The Blazer EV's performance highlights a growing interest in mid-size electric SUVs as consumers seek both practicality and sustainability.

The Tesla Cybertruck, a vehicle that has captured the public's imagination with its distinctive design, saw a decline in Q3 sales, moving an estimated 7,100 units, a 29% drop from its previous quarter. However, its year-to-date sales paint a brighter picture, with a 16% increase overall. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen ID.4 made a significant comeback, selling 12,470 units in Q3, a recovery that pushed it back into the top ten after a challenging second quarter.

Ford's F-150 Lightning found its footing in the market, climbing to the seventh spot with 23,034 units sold. Its Q3 sales alone increased by 40%, underscoring the growing demand for electric trucks. The Honda Prologue also enjoyed a stellar quarter, achieving its best performance yet with a 60% increase in sales, totaling 36,553 units for the year. This success comes amid the discontinuation of its luxury sibling, the Acura ZDX.

Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and Ford's Mustang Mach-E both demonstrate the increasing consumer interest in stylish yet practical electric vehicles. The Ioniq 5, refreshed for 2025, saw a 90% surge in sales, while the Mach-E maintained its fourth-place standing with a 51% rise in sales. The Chevrolet Equinox EV, however, emerged as the non-Tesla leader, selling 52,834 units. Its performance in Q3 alone, with 25,085 units sold, underscores its appeal in the compact SUV segment.

Dominating the list are Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y. The Model 3 experienced a 31% increase in Q3 with an estimated 50,700 sales, while the Model Y remains the bestselling EV in the United States despite a 20% drop in Q3 sales compared to the previous year. These figures highlight Tesla's ongoing dominance in the EV market, even as it faces increasing competition from other automakers striving to capture market share.

Federal tax credit ending caused the EV sales spike.

Interesting! Could the 'end of tax credit' frenzy be masking real consumer demand trends? The term 'unprecedented' in sales needs context!

I'm curious how the expiration of tax credits might influence long-term sales for newer brands trying to gain a foothold in an increasingly competitive market.
