Farasis Energy, a Chinese battery manufacturer supported by Mercedes-Benz, has announced significant advancements in its solid-state battery technology. The company is gearing up to deliver its first-generation sulfide-based solid-state batteries, boasting an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, by the end of this year. This development marks a crucial step in the evolution of battery technology, which could transform the electric vehicle (EV) market and beyond.
The announcement, made during an investor relations meeting, highlights Farasis Energy's commitment to advancing battery technology. The company has been working on its all-solid-state battery development, emphasizing the use of sulfide-based solid electrolytes. Farasis has confirmed that these batteries have progressed beyond laboratory stages and are now entering pilot production, with the construction of a 0.2 GWh pilot line underway. The first-generation cells will feature high-nickel ternary cathodes combined with high-silicon anodes, aiming to achieve an impressive energy density of 400-500 Wh/kg. The company plans to begin small-batch deliveries to strategic partners by late 2025.
Looking ahead, Farasis Energy is not resting on its laurels. The company is already planning its second-generation solid-state batteries, which are expected to debut in 2026. These batteries will incorporate lithium-metal anodes paired with lithium-rich manganese-based or high-nickel ternary cathodes, targeting an energy density of 500 Wh/kg. Furthermore, Farasis is setting its sights on a third-generation battery, projected to surpass 500 Wh/kg by 2027. This progressive roadmap demonstrates the company's long-term vision and its potential to significantly impact the battery industry.
In addition to its advancements in solid-state technology, Farasis Energy has reported that its semi-solid-state batteries are already in commercial use. These batteries, which are slightly more expensive than conventional liquid batteries, have found applications at the gigawatt-hour level. The company expects substantial growth in shipments by 2026 as it expands its designated projects. Current production facilities in Zhenjiang, Ganzhou, and Guangzhou are equipped to support both semi-solid-state and solid-state battery manufacturing, facilitating an eventual scale-up to gigawatt-hour production levels.
Farasis Energy's innovations extend beyond automotive applications. The company has also announced the introduction of its first-generation solid-state battery specifically for humanoid robots. These batteries, which utilize a sulfide solid electrolyte, high-nickel ternary cathode, and high-silicon anode, offer an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. They have successfully passed rigorous safety tests, including nail penetration and thermal chamber assessments. Farasis is working on customizing these batteries to optimize their size and output for lightweight design, long range, and high safety, addressing specific needs distinct from automotive requirements.
The strategic partnerships of Farasis Energy have been instrumental in its development trajectory. The company's collaboration with Mercedes-Benz began in 2020, and it has since established additional partnerships with companies like Geely and Togg. These alliances have enabled Farasis to supply battery cells for Mercedes-Benz’s EV models, such as the EQE and EQS, directly from its plants in China. Furthermore, Farasis operates Siro, a joint venture with Togg, and collaborates with FAW on commercial vehicle applications. These partnerships underscore Farasis's strategic approach to broadening its market reach and enhancing its technological capabilities.
Founded in 2009, Farasis Energy has consistently ranked first in domestic soft-pack battery shipments in China for several years, solidifying its position as a leading battery manufacturer. Listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange Star Market in 2020, the company has continued to innovate and expand its footprint in the EV and energy storage sectors. In early 2025, the Guangzhou Municipal Government took control of Farasis through Guangzhou Industrial Investment Holding Group, signaling a strong local backing and further solidifying its strategic importance in China’s energy landscape.
