In a significant move within the electric vehicle sector, Nio has launched its 2026 ES8 SUV during the Nio Day event in China. This new flagship model is positioned as the largest pure-electric SUV in the Chinese market, showcasing an array of advanced features and design improvements that highlight Nio's commitment to innovation and luxury in the EV space.
Nio Day, an annual event that draws attention to the latest innovations from the Chinese automaker, was the stage for the unveiling of the 2026 ES8 SUV. The event took place at the Hangzhou Convention and Exhibition Center and was attended by a large audience, both physically and virtually. The new ES8 stands out with its impressive dimensions—measuring 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height. It offers both six-seat and seven-seat configurations, catering to diverse consumer needs. The starting price for the ES8 is 406,800 yuan ($57,130) for a complete purchase, while the Battery as a Service (BaaS) option begins at 298,800 yuan ($42,000), making it accessible to a wider audience.
The design of the 2026 ES8 features several updates aimed at enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The SUV sports split diamond-cut running lights and hidden door handles that contribute to a sleek, modern look. Inside, the cabin is equipped with the Skyline panoramic display, a new horizontal central touchscreen, and the upgraded Nomi assistant, which provides a seamless driving experience. The interior is crafted from premium materials, including real wood and brushed metal, offering a luxurious feel. With a practical luggage capacity of 777 litres, which can expand to 3,240 litres with seats folded down, the ES8 is as practical as it is stylish. The vehicle's infotainment system includes a 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted screen with Dolby Vision and Atmos certification, and a 2,600 W audio system, ensuring entertainment is top-notch for all passengers. Additional features such as folding tables, a refrigerator, and electrochromic privacy glass add to the comfort and convenience of the ride.
Under the hood, the ES8 is powered by a dual-motor system delivering 520 kW and 700 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 3.97 seconds. Built on a 900 V high-voltage platform, the SUV is equipped with a 102 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 635 km on the CLTC cycle, and supports Nio's in-house 120 kWh 5C battery for future models. Its adaptive dual-chamber air suspension and CDC dampers provide a smooth ride, while a 41-degree front wheel steering angle ensures maneuverability with a turning radius of 5.7 meters. The new intelligent wet-surface driving mode enhances stability on slippery roads, highlighting Nio's focus on safety and performance.
Safety is a paramount concern for Nio, and the 2026 ES8 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features. It includes 11 airbags and 65 active assistance features, supported by Nio’s self-developed Shenji NX9031 chip and Qualcomm’s 8295 processor. This technology enables advanced driver assistance and augmented reality heads-up display functions, enhancing the driving experience and safety. The 'intelligent guardian' mode, which raises the suspension in flood conditions and can notify the owner remotely, is a testament to the brand's innovative approach to vehicle safety.
Nio Day 2025 was not just about the ES8 launch. The event also saw the introduction of the Nio ET9 Horizon Edition, another high-end electric vehicle from the automaker, priced at 818,000 yuan ($115,000). This new model features a distinctive two-color body, 23-inch rims, and a luxurious interior designed to provide maximum comfort. Nio's commitment to research and development is evident, with over 60 billion yuan invested over the past decade, underscoring its dedication to leading the electric vehicle industry with cutting-edge technology and design.
The launch of the 2026 ES8 marks a significant milestone for Nio, as it not only strengthens its presence in the Chinese EV market but also sets new standards for luxury and performance in electric vehicles. With deliveries set to begin shortly after the launch, Nio is poised to capture the attention of consumers looking for a high-performance, luxury electric SUV. As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, Nio's latest offerings demonstrate the brand's ability to innovate and adapt, ensuring it remains a key player in the global EV landscape.
