In a significant move within the electric vehicle (EV) market, MG has upgraded its MG4 Smart Edition to feature CATL batteries, enhancing its range and capabilities. This change has sparked interest and discussions among consumers and industry experts alike.

The MG4 530 Smart Edition, recently launched in China, now boasts batteries from CATL, one of the leading battery manufacturers in the world. This shift from the initially planned Ruipu Lanjun units was officially announced by MG General Manager Chen Cui, who cited the need to meet October delivery targets amidst limited battery production capacities as a key reason for the switch. The decision ensures that all units of the 530 Smart Edition will exclusively use CATL batteries, providing a consistent product offering that is expected to boost consumer confidence.

The MG4 Smart Edition is strategically positioned in the sub-100,000 yuan segment, equivalent to approximately 14,100 USD, offering an impressive 530-kilometer range according to the China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). This competitive pricing, combined with advanced driver-assistance features such as highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), underscores MG's commitment to providing value and technological innovation in the EV market. The vehicle's rapid sales growth since its market introduction in late August further highlights the strong consumer demand and market traction it is experiencing.

The decision to switch to CATL batteries, while initially a logistical adjustment, has been positively received across the industry. Observers and experts have noted that CATL's established technology and robust production capacity may enhance consumer confidence in terms of battery performance and safety. This move aligns with MG's strategy to leverage reliable and high-quality components to enhance the overall appeal of its products. The MG4's launch at the Chengdu Auto Show in August 2025 marked a new chapter for the brand, as it continues to redefine its offerings in the competitive EV landscape.

The MG4 is built on SAIC's E3 pure electric platform and is available in five trims, priced between 65,800 and 99,800 yuan (approximately 9,140–13,860 USD). It features a six-in-one electric motor capable of producing 120 kW, with a top speed of 160 km/h. The battery options include 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh packs, supporting ranges of 437 km and 530 km, respectively, with fast-charging capabilities. The vehicle's design incorporates modern elements like illuminated MG branding and arrow-shaped rear lights, inspired by the MG Cyberster, along with six body color options. Inside, the MG4 offers the MG x Oppo Smart Connectivity system and advanced infotainment technologies.

Competing in the compact EV segment, the MG4 goes head-to-head with models like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Geely Geome Xingyuan. The vehicle's focus on digital functionality, spacious interior, and affordability aligns with the shifting priorities of Chinese consumers, who increasingly value technology and practicality in their EV choices. The MG4's success is evident in its impressive sales figures, with over 30,000 orders secured within 24 days of its launch, reflecting the model's strong market appeal.

The transition to using CATL batteries in the MG4 Smart Edition is a testament to MG's adaptability and strategic foresight in the rapidly evolving EV market. As the brand continues to innovate and respond to consumer demands, it remains well-positioned to strengthen its presence in the global automotive industry. The MG4 exemplifies a balance between cutting-edge technology and consumer-friendly pricing, making it a noteworthy contender in the compact electric hatchback segment.
