In a bold step forward for the electric vehicle industry, the Leapmotor Lafa 5, backed by automotive giant Stellantis, has been officially revealed in China. With its impressive range and power specifications, the Lafa 5 aims to redefine the landscape of compact electric hatchbacks.
The Leapmotor Lafa 5, also known as Leapmotor B05, has made waves following its application for a sales license in China, revealing critical specifications. This electric hatchback boasts a 160 kW electric motor and offers a remarkable range of up to 605 km on a single charge. The vehicle's dimensions are meticulously crafted, with a body measuring 4430 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, and 1520 mm in height, supported by a wheelbase of 2735 mm. These measurements position the Lafa 5 as a formidable competitor in the compact hatchback segment, rivaling models such as the Volkswagen ID.3.
The global debut of the Leapmotor Lafa 5 at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich signals its strategic push into international markets. Partially acquired by Stellantis, Leapmotor has rapidly expanded its influence, with the Lafa 5 set to bolster the brand's presence beyond China's borders. From January to August 2025, Leapmotor sold an impressive 328,859 vehicles domestically, illustrating the brand's growing prowess in the electric vehicle sector.
Designed with a keen eye for aerodynamics, the Lafa 5 features smooth headlights connected by a signature LED strip, a slanted bonnet, and retractable door handles. These elements contribute to its low drag coefficient, enhancing efficiency and performance. Additionally, the optional LiDAR sensor on the roof highlights its commitment to cutting-edge technology, supporting advanced driver assistance systems.
Underpinning the Lafa 5 is Leapmotor's LEAP 3.5 modular architecture, also used in the B10 crossover. This platform allows for flexibility in powertrain configurations, aligning with Leapmotor's strategy for scalable and adaptable vehicle designs. Expected to offer similar powertrain options as the B10, the Lafa 5 will likely have an entry-level model with a 132 kW motor and a 56.2 kWh LFP battery, while higher trims will feature the 160 kW motor paired with a 67.1 kWh battery.
The introduction of the Lafa 5 not only underscores Leapmotor's ambitions but also reflects the broader trends in the automotive industry towards electric mobility. As the company continues its international expansion, the Lafa 5 is poised to challenge established players like the Volkswagen ID.3 in key markets. With its strategic backing from Stellantis, Leapmotor is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles worldwide.
