In a significant move within the electric vehicle (EV) arena, Leapmotor has unveiled its new flagship, the D19 SUV, promising to redefine luxury and efficiency in the electric automotive sector. Announced on October 16, the D19 is built on Leapmotor's D platform and is set to hit the market in the first half of 2026. Noteworthy for its technological advancements and impressive range, the vehicle is positioned to compete aggressively in the burgeoning EV marketplace.
The Leapmotor D19 comes in two variants: a fully electric (EV) model and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) model. The EV variant boasts an impressive 720 km range on a single charge, facilitated by a 115 kWh battery pack developed by CATL, which integrates lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium materials. In contrast, the EREV variant achieves a 500 km pure electric range, courtesy of an 80.3 kWh battery. This dual-option strategy allows Leapmotor to cater to a wider audience, from urban commuters to long-distance travelers.
Beyond its impressive range, the D19 is equipped with dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chips, which boast a compute power of up to 1280 TOPS. These chips are split between the vehicle's intelligent cockpit and its advanced driving assistance systems, ensuring seamless interaction and enhanced safety. Moreover, the SUV includes a pioneering feature: an onboard oxygen generator capable of producing up to 8 liters of oxygen per minute, making it particularly appealing for journeys to high-altitude regions.
Design-wise, the D19 adopts the 'Technology Natural Aesthetics 2.0' design language. The front of the SUV features a sophisticated three-stage headlight cluster that doubles as a projector, while a dynamic lower grille adjusts automatically to environmental conditions. The vehicle also sports a lidar on its roof, enhancing its autonomous driving capabilities. At the rear, a striking 1958 mm taillight containing 11,025 LED units completes its futuristic look.
Dimensionally, the Leapmotor D19 is a full-sized SUV, measuring over 5.2 meters in length and nearly 2 meters in width, with a wheelbase exceeding 3.1 meters. This generous size not only provides ample interior space but also enhances road presence. Consumers have five exterior paint options to choose from, including green, white, silver, gray, and black, allowing for a personalized touch.
In terms of performance, the EV variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds, leveraging its 540 kW (724 hp) power output. It also supports fast charging, with the ability to recharge 350 km of range in just 15 minutes using a 1,000V high-voltage platform. Conversely, the EREV variant utilizes an 800V platform and an engine as a range-extender, achieving a system power of 400 kW (536 hp). Fast charging allows the EREV to go from 30% to 80% charge in 15 minutes.
Leapmotor’s D19 is more than just another electric vehicle; it is a statement of intent in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. By integrating state-of-the-art technology with everyday practicality, Leapmotor aims to capture the attention of environmentally conscious consumers seeking both luxury and efficiency. As the company prepares for the D19's release, the automotive world will be watching closely to see how this ambitious SUV performs in the competitive EV market.
