Great Wall Motor (GWM) has officially launched presales for its updated Tank 400 mid-size SUV, marking a significant milestone in the competitive plug-in hybrid market. Featuring both the Hi4-T Intelligent and Hi4-Z Intelligent Editions, the 2025 model introduces notable upgrades in design, technology, and performance. The presale prices start at 309,800 yuan (approximately $43,500) for the Hi4-T and 329,800 yuan ($46,300) for the Hi4-Z. These models promise enhanced driving dynamics and advanced driver-assistance systems.

The new Tank 400 series continues to uphold its robust armored aesthetic, with the 2025 model year bringing refined exterior and interior updates. The SUV's front is characterized by a sleek hexagonal grille flanked by polygonal headlamps, while the newly designed bumper integrates high-power LED fog lamps capable of illuminating up to 31.6 meters. Enhancing its rugged appeal, the SUV includes black trim accents and a far-infrared night vision system. The side profile remains largely unchanged, maintaining its distinctive fender flares with exposed rivets. The Hi4-T variant offers retractable side steps, whereas the Hi4-Z comes with fixed steps, catering to different customer preferences. The vehicle dimensions measure 4,964 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, with a 2,850 mm wheelbase. Available in colors like Phantom Black, Wing Silver, Nebula Grey, and Dunhuang Purple, the Tank 400 asserts its presence on the road.

Inside, the Tank 400 is equipped with advanced technology aimed at enhancing both driver and passenger experiences. The dashboard features a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a head-up display (HUD) and the Coffee OS equipped with Coffee GPT voice interaction. Both variants include Nappa perforated leather seats with heating and ventilation, offering an eight-point massage function for the front seats. Rear passengers are not left out, enjoying a 15.6-inch entertainment screen, a 5.4-litre refrigerator, and manual sunshades. These thoughtful additions underscore GWM's commitment to luxury and comfort in their vehicles.

The performance of the Tank 400 is equally impressive, with the Hi4-T Intelligent Edition combining a 2.0T engine and a single electric motor to produce 310 kW and 750 N·m of torque, achieving a 0–100 km/h time of 6.8 seconds. It offers a 105 km WLTC electric range with a 103 kW fast charging capability. On the other hand, the Hi4-Z variant features a more powerful configuration with a 2.0T engine paired with dual P2/P4 motors, delivering a total output of 635 kW and 1,195 N·m, allowing it to sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, with a 200 km WLTC electric range and 163 kW fast charging.

Advanced safety and driver-assistance systems are a highlight of the Tank 400, featuring the third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra system. This system includes a roof-mounted Hesai ATX LiDAR, side cameras, and navigation-on-autopilot functions suitable for city and highway driving. These features, combined with the vehicle's robust construction, ensure a high level of safety and convenience, reinforcing GWM's reputation for integrating cutting-edge technology in their vehicles.

The market for mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs is becoming increasingly competitive, with the Tank 400 going head-to-head against models like BYD's FCB Bao 5 and Jetour Cross G700. The Tank 400's impressive sales figures, with 2,805 units sold in September 2025 alone, indicate a strong market presence and consumer interest. Its combination of performance, luxury, and technology positions it as a formidable contender in its segment.

As GWM continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the Tank 400's updates reflect a strategic approach to meeting evolving consumer demands. By enhancing performance, luxury, and safety, the Tank 400 not only appeals to current GWM enthusiasts but also attracts new customers looking for a versatile and technologically advanced SUV. With presales underway, GWM is poised to strengthen its foothold in the global automotive market.

I recall when I first got into hybrid vehicles; the technology wasn't as advanced, but it was still exciting. Seeing how far we've come with models like the Tank 400 amazes me. The blend of power and efficiency is truly impressive compared to the early days.
