In a significant recall affecting over 115,000 vehicles, Ford has identified a potential issue with the steering columns of its 2020 and 2021 Super Duty pickups, prompting concerns over driver safety.
Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 115,539 Super Duty pickups, specifically targeting the F-250, F-350, and F-450 models from the 2020 and 2021 model years. The recall revolves around a potential defect in the steering column that could result in a loss of steering control. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the steering column upper shaft may separate due to a hard slider that fails to meet pull-apart specifications. This separation could lead to a complete loss of steering, posing significant safety risks. Notably, there are no warning indicators within the vehicle to alert drivers of the impending issue, increasing the potential danger.
The issue first came to light on June 26, 2025, when Ford's Critical Concern Review Group was alerted. Subsequent investigations in July and August revealed that the steering column's design initially relied on a single primary staking to prevent separation, which proved insufficient. By February 2021, a second staking was added to improve safety. Fortunately, Ford has reported no accidents or injuries related to this defect thus far. The automaker has committed to notifying owners of the affected vehicles via mail, urging them to visit a dealership for a thorough inspection. During these inspections, dealers will assess the extension of the steering column upper shaft. Components that meet current safety standards will be reinforced, while those that don't will be replaced entirely.
The notification process is already underway, with dealerships having been informed about both the issue and its remedy. Ford plans to send interim owner notification letters between October 6 and October 10, with detailed remedy instructions following at the end of the year. This phased approach ensures that vehicle owners can address the problem promptly and efficiently. The recall underscores the critical nature of proactive safety measures in the automotive industry and the importance of rigorous testing and quality control to prevent such issues from reaching the consumer.
Recalls like these are not uncommon in the automotive industry, where safety is paramount. Ford's swift response highlights the company's commitment to maintaining customer safety and trust. It also reflects broader industry trends where manufacturers are increasingly vigilant about potential defects, often prompted by regulatory bodies like the NHTSA. This recall is just one of several recent safety investigations and recalls affecting various automakers, emphasizing the need for ongoing diligence in vehicle safety.
For Ford, this recall presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While addressing safety concerns is critical, the company also has the chance to reinforce its dedication to quality and customer care. By handling the recall effectively, Ford can mitigate potential reputational damage and assure customers of its commitment to their safety. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, such recalls remind us of the complexities and responsibilities inherent in vehicle manufacturing.
