In a significant move impacting over 100,000 vehicles, Ford has announced a recall for its 2024 to 2026 Ranger pickups. The recall addresses a potentially hazardous issue with the side curtain airbags, which, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), may tear upon deployment. This marks the third major recall involving the Ranger model this year, raising concerns among consumers and industry watchers alike.
The recall, impacting 100,900 Ranger pickups, stems from a defect in the side curtain airbags. Ford's documentation, submitted to the NHTSA, outlines the potential for the airbags to tear when deploying, due to contact with the B-pillar's inner reinforcement flange. This defect could affect both the left and right-side airbags, posing a significant safety risk during a crash. Vehicles affected were manufactured between December 9, 2022, and July 29, 2025. The issue not only highlights a critical safety concern but also adds to the growing list of challenges Ford has faced with this particular model.
This recall is the latest in a series of issues for the Ranger. Earlier this year, Ford recalled the 2025 Ranger for a brake booster defect and the 2024 model for a rearview camera issue. Additionally, a smaller recall affected 4500 pickups due to a steering problem. These repetitive recalls have placed Ford under scrutiny, with consumers questioning the reliability and safety of their vehicles. The automaker's approach to these recurring problems will be crucial in maintaining consumer trust and brand reputation.
In response to the current airbag issue, Ford plans to install protective shields on the affected vehicles. However, these shields are not yet available, and the company has informed owners that they expect availability by the fourth quarter of 2025. In the interim, Ford has advised Ranger owners to stay informed through the NHTSA recalls site or Ford’s own recalls page. This delay in providing a fix highlights the logistical challenges automakers face in addressing large-scale recalls.
The repetitive recalls have not only financial implications for Ford but also affect the broader automotive market. With increased scrutiny from regulators and consumers, automakers are under pressure to enhance quality control measures and ensure compliance with safety standards. This particular issue with the Ranger may prompt a reevaluation of manufacturing processes and quality assurance protocols at Ford, as well as across the industry.
While the current recall presents challenges, it also offers an opportunity for Ford to demonstrate its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. By addressing these issues head-on and improving its manufacturing and quality control processes, Ford can work towards rebuilding trust with its consumers. The company's proactive engagement with affected owners and transparent communication will be critical in navigating this turbulent period.
