In a significant development for the electric vehicle market, BYD has unveiled its 2026 Seal 05 DM-i with a groundbreaking range and features. Launched at an attractive price point of $11,200, the vehicle promises an increased pure electric range and a comprehensive range of 2,000 km, marking a step forward in affordable hybrid technology.

The 2026 BYD Seal 05 DM-i enters the competitive electric vehicle market with impressive enhancements. Retaining its price from previous models, this latest iteration boasts a pure electric range that has more than doubled from 55 km to 128 km. This increase is attributed to the new 15.87 kWh Blade battery pack. The vehicle’s exterior continues to embody BYD's 'Ocean aesthetics' design language, a signature style that aligns with the brand’s commitment to sustainable innovation. Notably, the model has removed the automatic grille, maintaining a sleek, modern appearance. Its dimensions remain consistent with previous versions, providing a familiar silhouette that measures 4780 mm in length, 1837 mm in width, and 1515 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2718 mm.

Inside, the Seal 05 DM-i offers a sophisticated driving experience with a flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel and an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument panel. The central control is managed through a 10.1-inch screen powered by the DiLink smart cockpit system, which enhances user interaction and connectivity. The interior's highlight is the replacement of the crystal gear lever with an electronic column shifter, optimizing space on the center console. Safety and comfort are addressed through six airbags, manually adjustable front seats, a 6-speaker audio system, and cruise control. Additionally, the car includes a 508 L rear trunk, providing ample storage for consumers.

The powertrain of the Seal 05 DM-i is a testament to BYD's advanced engineering. Utilizing BYD's 5th-generation DM technology, the vehicle combines a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with a front electric motor. The engine produces a maximum power of 74 kW (99 hp) and peak torque of 126 Nm, while the electric motor delivers 120 kW (161 hp) and 210 Nm of torque. This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a brisk 7.9 seconds. With a full fuel tank and battery charge, the car achieves a comprehensive range of 2,000 km, and its NEDC comprehensive fuel consumption is an economical 3.08 L per 100 km.

The release of the 2026 Seal 05 DM-i comes at a time when BYD is experiencing significant sales momentum. In August alone, the company sold 13,495 units of the model, contributing to a cumulative sales figure of 49,821 units for the first eight months of 2025. This accounts for 2.49% of BYD's overall sales, underscoring the vehicle's popularity and market impact. The consistent sales performance reflects the brand's strategic positioning within the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segment, where demand continues to grow amid global shifts towards sustainable transportation.

Looking ahead, the 2026 BYD Seal 05 DM-i is poised to further solidify BYD's reputation as a leader in the electric vehicle industry. The model's balance of affordability, enhanced range, and sophisticated technology makes it a compelling choice for consumers seeking sustainable mobility solutions. As BYD continues to innovate and expand its lineup, the Seal 05 DM-i represents a significant milestone in the evolution of hybrid vehicles, blending cost-effectiveness with cutting-edge technology to meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.

BYD's new Seal 05 sounds great but will it deliver? Range claims often fall short. Let's see if the 2,000 km is legit or just marketing voodoo tech.

2,000 km range for $11,200? Sounds like they used magic, or maybe just some hyper-efficient engineering. Either way, hope it doesn't short-circuit on the way to the future!

How does BYD manage to offer such a long range and low price? Are there compromises in other aspects of performance or quality?
